insertion of all may not to any one person seem warrantable, yet it is believed that there are few whose connection with the city dates back many decades who can fail to find interest in at least some of the pictures, many of which were with difficulty secured from almost forgotten depositories, and which would perhaps in a few years have been wholly unobtainable. In this connection special thanks are due to Hon. R. T. Van Horn, Mr. John R. Balis, Mr. William Stewart, Col. Theo. S. Case, Mr. George D. Fearey, Mr. Edward Smith, Mr. John Jarboe, Mr. Lathrop Bullene, Mr. Mason Dean, Mr. F. B. Hughes, Mr. Wm. Bales, and the Public Library. To all those who kindly furnished pictures which were found unavailable, thanks are also extended. The illustrations are generally reproductions of old photographs faded and yellowed by time; and if many of the plates seem indistinct, it is the fault of the originals and not of the publishers, who have made the best use of the material furnished them.

The only regret of the editor is that so many experiences which memory suggests must have existed are too indistinctly remembered for relation.

With these introductory words, I commend to the friends of my mother a work which for many months has occupied more or less of my time, and which has afforded me much comfort; I can hardly say pleasure, because work so tinged with melancholy, although affording consolation, can not be classified as enjoyment
